Four appliances were sent to the property in Egremont Place, Hastings on Monday night (October 5) where crews tackled a fire in the kitchen of a ground-floor flat.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel jet to tackle the fire, which involved overheated cooking oil, the fire service said.

The ambulance service said: “One ambulance crew attended the scene and one person, suffering from smoke inhalation, was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to Conquest Hospital.”

The flat fire prompted East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to remind residents of the importance of safety in the kitchen.

A spokesman added: “More than half of accidental fires at home start in the kitchen.

“Many kitchen fires happen when people are not paying attention or they leave things unattended.”
