The fundraising page was set up by family member and work colleague Kiera Stanley.

She said: “My uncle Darren Stanley woke at about 1.30am after hearing a thud and realised Joanna wasn’t in bed, he found her at the bottom stairs.”

After the fall Joanna badly fractured her face, had multiple major skull fractures, broken ribs, and flesh wounds, also the left side of her body is not being responsive.

Kiera said: “Some days are really good whereas the next day not so much.

“It can feel like one step forward, two steps back.

“I saw her before lockdown and she knew my name but then she thought the year was 2017.

“She is no longer under sedation and has experienced marginal improvements to date, being this the case we are hoping for a positive recovery. She has been awake but not for very long as she is so tired.”

Joanna turned 40 on Sunday, November 22, and Kiera explained friends and family had different plans for her birthday prior to her fall.

She added: "It has devastated friends and family knowing she was so excited for it and that she had to spend it alone in hospital due to COVID."

Kiera has known Joanna for nearly seven years. They both currently work at Chickidee store in County Mall, Crawley.

The target for the page is to raise £5,000 and so far they have had £2,640.

Kiera said: “We don’t know how long she will be off sick for so I wanted to do something to help and set up the page so that she doesn’t have to worry about money.

“Setting a goal did seem difficult and almost did not seem appropriate with what is going on in the world at the moment but we would be absolutely humbled by any donations, random acts of kindness and supporting messages for Jo as she recovers.

“Walking around freely at home is something we all do everyday and it is scary to think this could happen to any of us.”
