Go for a glowing night-time Memory Walk to support the Alzheimer’s Society

The Memory Walk with a twist comes to Brighton this week when residents will dress up in bright glow sticks, glitter, and neon colours to ‘shine a light’ on dementia.

Beginning at Hove Lawns, the 5km walk will take place from 6.30- 7.30pm on Saturday (March 7).

The event is one of a series of Alzheimer’s Society GLOW events which now take place in 12 locations across the country.

A variation on the charity’s Memory Walks, which take place in September and October, the events encourage people to dress brightly to raise awareness of Dementia.

Around 850,000 people are thought to be living with Dementia according to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Samantha Stevens, 34, from Brighton, has experience of the condition and is urging people to register for the walk to raise money for Dementia research and services.

“I worked as a carer and a care manager for a number of years before joining the Alzheimer’s Society back in 2018,” she said.

“As a carer, I supported people with dementia and saw firsthand how terrible the disease can be, stripping people of their memories.

“I also have personal experiences of witnessing the cruel impact dementia has.

“One of my grandmothers had dementia and passed away in 2011 and my other grandmother also had dementia and passed away in December last year.

Samantha’s son, AJ, who is eight-year-old, will be taking part in the GLOW walk on March 7 in memory of his great grandmother.

“We want to raise as much awareness as possible about dementia and stop it being a taboo subject so if taking part in the GLOW Walk means that we help with making just one more person aware of dementia and the effects it has, then we have done something good,” Samantha said.

Jacqui Justice-Chrisp, Alzheimer’s Society area manager for Kent, Medway, East Sussex and Brighton and Hove, said: “Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia, there is currently no cure. But your fundraising can change this, by walking to defeat dementia at GLOW.

“We’re calling on people with dementia, family, friends and teams from across Brighton to get glowing this March and join us at Hove Lawns for a Memory Walk with a twist.

“Dementia devastates lives; it slowly strips people of their memories, relationships and identities.

“Every pound raised at GLOW will help Alzheimer’s Society provide vital information and support, improve care, fund research and create lasting change for people affected by the condition.
