It had been closed since the national lockdown was imposed in March.

Cllr Colin Fitzgerald, deputy leader of Hastings Borough Council, said: “Unfortunately our West Hill Lift suffered a technical problem earlier this week, meaning we are having to close it until further notice.

“However, we have been able to redeploy our staff from the West Hill Lift to the East Hill Lift, the steepest funicular in the country, which is now open for the first time for nearly seven months.

“It has already proven popular and saw very steady business on its first day open, with many passengers using it to enjoy the spectacular views from the top of the East Hill.

“It will remain open every day until the West Hill Lift is repaired, and we are hoping to keep it open for weekends beyond that, until its regular closure for maintenance in January.”
