Hastings was featured in the March 1 edition of the Sunday Times with an article entitled ‘Three Reasons to Visit Hastings’.

But the article wasn’t well received by everyone and came under fire for only concentrating on the Old Town.

The three reasons given for visiting the town were art, fish and rummaging, with the article mentioning the Hastings Contemporary Gallery, the fishing beach and Old Town shops.

Maggies restaurant and The Crown come in for praise, and author Sean Newsome said: “Best of all though is AG Hendy (in the High Street), which is stocked with brushes. In a town that sweeps away the notion that the English seaside is tired and samey, it’s wonderfully appropriate.’

Old Town resident Alan Griffiths said: “It’s the same old - we could write our own press release.”

Owen Hart, of London Road, St Leonards, said: “It’s a lazy article. Basically he hasn’t set foot outside the Old Town and there is far more to Hastings and St Leonards than just the Old Town. Not a mention of the vibrant shops and art galleries in St Leonards, the pier, the seafront with it’s Art-Deco shelters, Goat Ledge, or any of these places.”

Pete Morrison, of Elphinstone Road, said: “Did he even bother walking up the East Hill and taking a look at the country park?”
