Hastings reports another drop in Covid cases but numbers remain 'extremely high'

People living in East Sussex have been urged to continue protecting themselves and others after the latest Covid-19 statistics were published.

East Sussex County Council said case numbers across the county are still 'extremely high' in all borough and districts but the rate of infection is continuing to drop in each area.

East Sussex's rate of infection for the seven days up to Sunday (January 31) was 309 per 100,000 people – exactly the same rate as reported across England as a whole.

In Hastings, there were 300 reported cases in those seven days, which is down on the 363 cases reported the week before. The town's rate of infection is now 323.8 per 100,000 people.

Rother, Eastbourne, Lewes and Wealden have also reported reductions in the number of cases this week compared to the previous week.

In its latest update, the county council said: "1,762 new Covid-19 cases were reported in East Sussex in the latest available 7-day period as published by GOV.UK on Sunday 31 January 2021 at 4pm.

"That’s down from 2,204 when last reported. Let’s keep it moving in the right direction – cases here are still extremely high and we must all do our part to protect ourselves and the people around us.

"Infection rates in East Sussex are the same as the national average."

The latest Covid-19 case numbers in each area of East Sussex:

Eastbourne: 456 cases between January 24 and January 31 (616 cases between January 16 and January 23)

Hastings: 300 cases between January 24 and January 31 (363 cases between January 16 and January 23)

Lewes: 320 cases between January 24 and January 31 (393 cases between January 16 and January 23)

Rother: 221 cases between January 24 and January 31 (291 cases between January 16 and January 23)

Wealden: 429 cases between January 24 and January 31 (541 cases between January 16 and January 23)
