Hastings seafront roadworks end after months of traffic misery but road is now mostly empty

Major roadworks on Hastings seafront which have caused frustration and delays for drivers since early January have been completed ahead of the Easter deadline only for the road to be the quietest it has been in memory due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown.

The roadworks, which saw the fountain closed off and a single lane controlled by lights at Pelham Place, was necessary for the laying of new gas pipes.

The works also affected pedestrians with large holes being dug along the walkway and barriers being erected, leading to some to describe it as ‘an assault course’.

They also saw the closure of a busy bus-stop outside Iceland on the seafront.

The seafront and promenade has been quiet this week during the fine weather leading up to the Easter weekend, with people appearing to respect the lock-down rules. People have been exercising on the promenade but people have been observing social distancing and the beaches have been empty.
