Here’s how much the average property in Eastbourne costs

House prices in Eastbourne have risen in recent months, according to the latest figures.

The average house price in the town in May was £241,375, Land Registry statistics show – a 1.6 per cent increase on April.

​This ​boost ​contributes to the longer-term trend, which has seen property prices in the area ​achieve 1.5 per cent annual growth​.

Over May, the picture was ​better than that across the South East, where prices ​decreased 1.1 per cent, and Eastbourne outperformed the 0.3 per cent rise for the UK as a whole.

Over the last year, the average sale price of property in Eastbourne ​​rose by £3,600 – putting the ​area 41st among the region’s 67 local authorities for annual growth.

Owners of flats saw the biggest improvement in property prices in Eastbourne in May – they increased 1.9 per cent, to £176,439 on average. Over the last year, prices rose by 0.7 per cent.

• Detached: up 1.2% monthly; up 1.8% annually; £448,686 average

• Semi-detached: up 1.6% monthly; up 2.5% annually; £311,070 average

• Terraced: up 1.3% monthly; up 2.2% annually; £241,923 average

First-time buyers in Eastbourne spent an average of £​207,700 on their property – ​£2,700 more than a year ago, ​and ​£35,100 more than in May 2015.

By comparison, former owner-occupiers paid £​267,500 on average in May​ – 28.8 per cent more than first-time buyers.

Buyers paid 25.7 per cent less than the average price in the South East (£325,000) in May for a property in Eastbourne.

Across the South East, property prices are higher than those across the UK, where the average cost £236,000.

The most expensive properties in the South East were in Elmbridge – £594,000 on average, and 2.5 times as much as in Eastbourne.

Elmbridge properties cost 2.8 times as much as homes in Southampton (£210,000 average), at the other end of the scale.

The highest property prices across the UK were in Kensington and Chelsea, where the average May sale price of £1.4 million could buy 16 properties in Burnley (average £88,000).
