Homeless people in Eastbourne and Lewes aimed to be housed by weekend, say councils

Eastbourne and Lewes councils are working to make sure homeless people have a place to stay in time for the weekend.

It comes after local authorities have been told to house all rough sleepers due to the coronavirus outbreak.

A spokesperson for Eastbourne Borough Council and Lewes District Councils said the authorities have sourced ‘more than enough’ places for people to stay.

They said in a statement: “Council officers from Homes First, the Rough Sleepers Initiative and supporting charities are working in partnership to get all rough sleepers in Eastbourne and the Lewes district into safe accommodation today.

“We have sourced more than enough places and while we have made excellent progress, it is a difficult to engage group.

“We will review the placements on Monday to ensure everyone is safe and happy in their accommodation.”
