Sangeeta Parashar from BrownBasket, based in Amberley Road, was successful in the professional baking category of the Helen & Douglas House hospice’s ‘Bake it ‘til you make it’ contest.

Sangeeta themed her winning cake around the hospice, and it was this that caught the eye of judge Karisha Pithwa, from Crème De La Cakes in Dunstable, who appeared on the Channel 4 show.

She said: “I choose Sangeeta’s cake as the winning cake because of the nice back story about the hospice.

“The messages were just beautiful and she really appreciated all the work everyone at the hospice does. It was amazing. She put a lot of effort and time into a cake so well done Sangeeta.”

Sangeeta, whose passion for baking started back in India, was motivated to enter the competition by the care the hospice provides terminally ill children and their families.

She created a vanilla sponge filled with fresh strawberry and buttercream and presented it virtually along with the other competition entrants.

She said: “I started making figures of various actions performed by the hospice nursing staff and how children will enjoy the care.

“I made a Hut House which is made up of fresh cream having a rotation base, so that it will rotate 360 Degree. This represents that Helen & Douglas will always be there, round- the-clock for needy children.

“There is a girl sitting in the garden and reading the books, a wheelchair and children’s play area with a ball and a kid is playing inside. This is inspirational to me.

“Helen & Douglas House also help children in the hospice garden so I have created a boy watching ducks in the pond with a special oxygen cylinder connected to his face.

“I have represented their amazing nursing care by making a fondant figure of a nurse standing near a boy laid down on a hospice bed and with a thermometer in his mouth.

“It was an immense pleasure for me to participate in this great competition. I felt great joy assembling all together as a story on a 15” cake board. But I felt bad for not being able to not share the layered cake with great staff and children at the hospice.”

Other judges in the competition, which helped raise funds for the hopsice, included Molly Robbins from Cheshire’s Sugar and Crumbs who also featured on Channel 4’s Extreme Cake Makers, and 14-year old up-and-coming baking star Emily Martin.

Manjeet Pabla, from the hospice, said: “Our ‘Bake it ‘til you make it’ virtual bake-off competition was great way for people to show off the baking skills they have developed during lock down and challenge their friends and family to compete against them.

“With our shops having been closed for 4 months this year and our mass participation events cancelled because of COVID19, virtual events like this are vital to raise money for us.”
