Horsham ceremony marks Armistice Day

A ‘closed’ Armistice Day wreath-laying ceremony was held at Horsham’s war memorial in the town centre yesterday.

The ceremony was held in addition to Remembrance Sunday to mark ‘the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.’

In accordance with government guidelines, the traditional event which would normally take place to commemorate Armistice Day with a live audience was unable to happen because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The ceremony began with a buglar sounding the Last Post, followed by two minutes silence, wreath laying and dedication and blessing.

Horsham District Council chairman Karen Burgess led the wreath laying with wreaths also being laid by a member of the Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion and Michael Boulton CO Army Cadets.

The Rev Lisa Barnet addressed the audience and said prayers.
