Despite the eight-hour time difference, Sophie Lee, Peter Leung and Andy Yip – who live in Hong Kong – have been participating in the Horsham college’s online lessons and emailing homework assignments.

They have done so with such success in English that they have each been awarded a commendation.

Collyer’s Ghislaine Davies-Goff, who teaches English to international students, said: “Andy, Peter and Sophie are enrolled on the international pre-A Level programme and should have joined their classes in January. However, due to the pandemic, they are still at home in Hong Kong.

“Their determination to make the best of a difficult situation is inspiring. They’re disappointed that they can’t be at college, meeting their teachers and classmates and making friends, but they’re tackling the challenge of distance learning – and it really is distance learning – with huge enthusiasm.

“They have completed every assignment set, met every deadline and the standard of their work has been excellent. Their commendations are very well-deserved and I look forward to welcoming them to in-class lessons.”

Araya Redman, the students’ pastoral tutor, said the students have worked incredibly hard since the day they started and have been doing exceptionally well despite their initial nerves due to the unusual circumstances.

She said: “They always ask questions if they need anything or are unsure, and always try their best at everything. I am glad that I have been given the opportunity to be their tutor during their first experience of Collyer’s and I hope that I will get the opportunity to meet them in person soon.”

Collyer’s deputy principal Steve Martell said the three students are a credit to the Collyer’s community, and that Ghislaine and Araya’s professional support has been ‘nothing short of outstanding’, while Richard Rothwell, Collyer’s director of admissions and marketing, said he was proud of the students’ progress and is looking forward to welcoming them to the campus.
