Adam Luck, 45, from the Holbrook area, said he was fundraising to pay for masks to be 3D printed to protect NHS workers from the coronavirus.

He added: “Unless you are living on the moon you already know about Coronavirus.

“Quite simply, the NHS staff are being heroic at this moment in time – to be fair, they are the rest of the time too.

“I believe it is our job to protect them as best we can.”

Adam said Dr Dave Triska, his friend and a Surrey GP, has worked with a 3D printing company to build protective masks which cost around £4 each to produce.

A fundraising goal of £400 was first set by Adam but this was smashed within hours.

He said: “I aimed for £400 and thought I was being optimistic.

People who put money in – I have no idea who they are but they’re putting £50 in.

“You feel a connection. It brings us all together.”

The fundraiser has so far received donations of more than £1,800.

He said he has now found an online group of 3D printers that are working together to make as many visors as possible.

The collective hopes to build tens of thousands of visors according to Adam.

He added: “Obviously it makes sense that we support them.

“I am also going to offer up my time to help on the administrative side too. I couldn’t be any more excited about this.”

Adam said as a police officer he is normally first on the scene to ‘dark, scary situations’.

But he said he wanted to raise funds for medical equipment as a ‘positive and uplifting’ way to support the NHS as the health service fights coronavirus.

Donating to the cause has helped combat feelings of isolation while in lockdown, according to Adam.

He said: “I obviously want to help people but there’s a real anti-isolation feel in doing it as a whole.”

A message from the Editor, Gary Shipton:

Thank you for reading this story on our website.

But I also have an urgent plea to make of you.

In order for us to continue to provide high quality local news on this free-to-read site and in print, please purchase a copy of our newspaper as well. With the coronavirus lockdown having a major impact on our town centres and many of our valued advertisers - and consequently the advertising that we receive - we are more reliant than ever on you buying a copy.

Our journalists are highly trained by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and our content is independently regulated by IPSO to some of the most rigorous standards anywhere in the world. Our content is universally trusted - as all independent research proves.

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: “Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role.”

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.

In addition, please write to your MP urging the Government to provide some additional financial support for local newspapers and their websites like this one and ensuring that supermarkets continue to stock them. I cannot stress enough how important such an intervention would be.

We thank all our readers and advertisers for their understanding and support - and we wish YOU all the best in the coming weeks. Keep safe, and follow the Government advice. Thank you.
