Concerns were brought to the attention of The Midhurst Society after someone living outside the town spotted unsightly litter at Holmbush Way during a visit to the town.

The issue was raised with Midhurst Town Council on Friday (April 9) and by the following morning, representatives were out to deal with it, armed with litter pickers and bin bags.

A spokesman for The Midhurst Society said: “Two days ago one of our followers alerted us to the rubbish problem. We shared on Facebook, photographed it and on Friday communicated with Cllr Jeanette Sutton.”

After Saturday’s clean up, the spokesperson said: “Well done to the three individuals, and to Midhurst Town Council.”

Much of the litter was inaccessible due to thickets and brambles, said the town council.

Cllr Sutton will be contacting Chichester District Council to alert them about the remainder of the rubbish.

She said: “There were hundreds of lager cans and industrial levels of domestic waste. It might be really affecting the wildlife there so we went over on Saturday morning for half an hour and took waste away.

“We felt ashamed that people from outside town were seeing this waste and giving them a poor impression of the town so the minute we heard about it we were down there.

“We were making the point really and just doing as much as we could.

“It was almost exclusively lager cans and a fair amount of glass bottles too.

“Good progress has certainly been made.”

Cllr Sutton later contacted Chichester District Council to alert them to the remainder of the litter.

Cllr Sutton was joined by fellow councillor Debbie Smallman and events officer Jess Brown-Fuller.
