Kind-hearted Littlehampton woman’s help for flood victim

AFTER being touched by last week’s tragic story of flooding victim Terence Barter, Littlehampton woman Jackie Twigger took it in her own hands to help the 61-year-old.

Within minutes of reading the Gazette’s report about Terence, Jackie, of Cornwall Road, said she rushed up to her attic, in a bid to find anything that might help the devastated Littlehampton man.

The 72-year-old pensioner said: “It’s such a tragedy. I felt so, so sad when I read the story.

“I said to my husband, Colin, ‘There must be something we can do to help?’.

“So I went up into the attic and took all the spare bedding we hardly ever use. I know Terence could make better use of it than we could.”

The great-grandmother-of-two has since parcelled up a double duvet, pillow cases, toiletries, and even a CD player and speakers to help replace some of Terence’s destroyed electrical items.

Jackie, who also has four children and six grandchildren, said: “I feel that if we can help people, as much as we can during this life, then it’s all been worthwhile.”

Jackie is one of hundreds of people who have opened their hearts to this month’s flooding victims in the Littlehampton area.

About 30 basement flats, in South Terrace, were ruined after torrential rain overwhelmed sewerage systems in the street.

Many residents saw 4ft of water, filled with raw sewage, flood into their homes – causing £1,000s of damage – Terence’s included.

Jackie has left her donation inside the Gazette office, in Beach Road, for Terence.
