Unsung heroes across the Lewes district were celebrated at a special event at Newhaven Fort on April 11.

The event, hosted by chair of Lewes District Council, Cllr Tony Nicolson, celebrated the contribution of volunteers.

There were 36 unsung heroes nominated who each received a certificate, presented by the Deputy Lieutenant of East Sussex, Amanda Hamblin.

Guests were given lunch, enjoyed a performance by talented young singer Tamsin Hodges and were taken on tours of Newhaven Fort.

Cllr Tony Nicholson said: “This event celebrates the selfless contribution of people who support the Lewes district community and are an inspiration to us all.

“Be it caring for the young or the old, running sports clubs, providing rescue services, facilitating community interest in a cause, looking after our environment or providing any service for the good of the community, our volunteers are exemplary in their efforts to make our community a better place to live in.

“Volunteers are the champions whose efforts for people are often unrecognised, but go a long way in fostering community spirit.

“A big thank you to all of you for making a difference to our lives and the local community.”

Celebrated volunteers on the day included Pippa Campbell who set up Pippa’s Group for the under-fives in Lewes 25 years ago, and has been running it ever since to look after pre-schoolers and their parents as a family, including those with complex needs.

Also celebrated were Maria Davey and Heather Sayers who work very hard for the Deans Senior Tea Clubs to give elderly and lonely people in Peacehaven, Newhaven, Saltdean and Bevendean fun tea dances and outings to look forward to.

Ella Edwards and Tom Gwilliam were recognised for their contribution as members of Seaford Lifeguards, a voluntary group which aims to keep Seaford Bay free from danger and to prevent loss of life by drowning.

The chairman’s term of office comes to an end in May and this was his last big event of the year.
