Littlehampton lifesaver strikes gold on way to national final

LIFESAVER David Slade, from Littlehampton, had no time to think when he saw six people in difficulty in a swimming pool.

He immediately put into practice all the skills developed as a member of Horsham Life Saving Club.

Fortunately, the “emergency” was a mock exercise, set for the south-east regional finalists in the Royal Life Saving Society National Lifesaving Competition, at Eltham.

And David came through with flying colours, taking first place and the gold medal in the men’s masters competition for the 60-plus age group.

David, who qualified through the Sussex branch heats, will now go forward to the national finals, to be held in Sheffield in December.
