Littlehampton’s RNLI to be bolstered by winds of fortune

THE charitable winds of change look set to bolster the Littlehampton RNLI lifeboat station for the foreseeable future.

It seems that kind-hearted husband and wife Jaki and Gareth Cornford, who took over the former Cob and Pen pub, in Surrey Street, last year, have brought their fund-raising talents into the town, having raised about £1,500 for two good causes in the area.

Before moving to Littlehampton, the couple owned the Windmill pub, in Southwick. While there, they raised about £10,000 for the Adur branch of Macmillan Cancer Support.

This month, the publicans’ newest beneficiaries, the Littlehampton RNLI lifeboat station, received a cheque for £365.69p at the pub, now known as the White Hart. Jaki and Gareth also presented a cheque for £295.50p to representatives of Macmillian Cancer Support.

Malcolm Somner, the Littlehampton RNLI fund-raising branch chairman, said: “It’s amazing to get such sterling support from the White Hart.

“We are supported entirely by the public and without their generosity we simply wouldn’t be able to function.

“There would be absolutely no way we would be able to continue with our essential life-saving role, without the kindness of the public, so I’d like to thank everyone who has helped us.”

Jaki said that the pub would be doing more fund-raising events to help other good causes in the town, later this year.

She said: “We’ve always been very charitable and love doing things for others. As the RNLI is right on our front door, it seemed like the best option.”

The couple wished to thank long-time supporter Martin Long for his help over the years.
