Lucky scratchcard win for Sussex mum

Stopping to buy some sweets on her way home from work proved a lucky decision for a Sussex mum.

Donna Newby decided to pick up a scratchcard as well as the sweets – and ended up winning £1,000.

Donna, 46, from Billingshurst, was on her way back from working at a local international boarding school when she stopped at Morrisons petrol station in Billingshurst to buy some sweets for her son’s school fayre.

"While I was queueing, I decided I may as well get a £1 scratch card,” said Donna. “It was when I was at home still in the car I decided to scratch it, I was so shocked to see three 1000 symbols. I overlooked the card again and again.

"I then went inside and said to my husband ‘I’ve won £1,000!! Check this card, am I imagining it?’ He said that it certainly looked like it so we made the online claim.

"We have since received the money and will be using it towards a holiday.”

Donna says that she has been occasionally buying scratchcards since she was 16. “The most I’ve ever won at a time is £20, probably three times in my life.”
