Man rescued from fire in Lewes tragically dies

A 29-year-old man who was rescued from a fire in Lewes has tragically died.

Sussex Police said officers were called to a property in Spences Lane, Lewes, at just after 12.30am on Monday (January 27), following reports of a fire.

A spokesman said: “A 29-year old man who lived at the address was found inside the property and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, in a critical condition. He sadly died later that day.

“No other injuries were reported.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and the coroners officer will be continuing enquiries.

“The cause of the fire has not yet been established but is not believed to have been deliberate.”

One person was rescued, a spokesman said, and crews from Lewes, Preston Circus and Barcombe were using two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet to put the fire out.

At around 1.30am on Monday, the fire service tweeted to say the fire had been put out and that while the incident had been scaled down, two fire engines remained on the scene.
