Middleton runner defends title

Peter Chittenden travelled to the Orkney Isles to run the Island of Hoy Half Marathon for his third entry into the race.

The 74-year-old and member of Felpham-based Tone Zone Runners successfully defended his 70-plus trophy.

It was the third time Peter has won the trophy - a mini Zimmer frame - to make it a hat-trick of triumphs.

He said: “I had a good battle with the two other 70+ local runners and overtook them between nine-and-a-half to ten miles and pulled clear to finish in 2hr 14min 9secs despite a calf strain.

“This was my 29th race so far this year and I’m on course to complete my target of at least 50 by the end of the year.”

This year’s was the 26th of the half marathons. Its undulating route, mainly through countryside, takes in spectacular views across Scapa Flow to the Orkney mainland and several nearby islands.
