The Midhurst Society has criticised plans for a care home on the site of the former Grange Centre.

Society members said they would be ‘extremely dissappointed’ should the home be built.

Midhurst's Grange Centre site set to become care homeOn their behalf, vice-chairman Harvey Tordoff said: “The Midhurst Society would be extremely disappointed should the Grange site become a residential care home.

“We appreciate Chichester District Council needs to consider the interests of all its citizens, but that should not be at the expense of one section of the community. Midhurst has demonstrated it does not want a care home on this prime location.

“As far as we are aware, no evidence has been produced of a need for a care home in the centre of town.

“Whilst there was overwhelming local support for a supermarket on this site, we accept that without appropriate expressions of interest this was beyond the power of CDC to deliver.

“However, we believe the site should have continued to provide community benefit, as it has done for 60 years.

Views of Midhurst residents ‘ignored’ as Grange site sold for a care home“Adjacent to and complementing the existing facilities at The Grange, this could have been a leisure and arts hub worthy of the home of the South Downs National Park, and one that would have attracted visitors from miles around.”

Observer readers also shared their anger at the news with many saying they feel ‘ignored’ and calling the decision a ‘waste of money’.
