A co-operative pub has launched a ‘meals on wheels’-style service earlier than planned to help vulnerable members of the public during the Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

The Bevy, in Moulsecoomb, is delivering hot meals three times a week as part of its new scheme Bevy Bites.

It was due to roll-out the initiative to support those unable to get to the pub later in the spring.

However, due to the Covid-19 outbreak the community-run venue started the service in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean immediately.

Helen Jones, who is coordinating the pub’s efforts, said: “We’re managing to feed a lot of people who usually come to our lunch clubs for the elderly so we can still provide them a lifeline.

“We’re also now receiving lots of requests from local people with underlying health issues who are on their own and would be going without food if it wasn’t for Bevy Bites.

“A lot of these people are hard up, feeling very anxious and very isolated.”

She added: “We think the demand will be huge as more people learn about it. We want people in the area to know that if you can’t get out of your house, you don’t have to go hungry.”

The pub has been working with schools, churches and organisations in the area to develop a combined response to ensure help is given to all those who need it throughout the crisis. Brighton Aldridge Community Academy has collaborated with the pub on Bevy Bites, building up a reserve of frozen meals with help from the not-for-profit social enterprise Brighton Food Factory.

The Bevy is appealing for donations via its website – www.thebevy.co.uk – to ensure Bevy Bites can continue.

Those who live in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean and have been told not to, or cannot leave their home and would like a meals, or know someone who would, can call 01273 281009.

In order for us to continue to provide high quality local news on this free-to-read site and in print, please purchase a copy of our newspaper as well. With the coronavirus lockdown having a major impact on our town centres and many of our valued advertisers - and consequently the advertising that we receive - we are more reliant than ever on you buying a copy.

Our journalists are highly trained by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and our content is independently regulated by IPSO to some of the most rigorous standards anywhere in the world. Our content is universally trusted - as all independent research proves.

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: “Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role.”

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.

In addition, please write to your MP urging the Government to provide some additional financial support for local newspapers and their websites like this one and ensuring that supermarkets continue to stock them. I cannot stress enough how important such an intervention would be.

We thank all our readers and advertisers for their understanding and support - and we wish YOU all the best in the coming weeks. Keep safe, and follow the Government advice. Thank you.
