Today (September 10) is an awareness day to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides.

Every year organisations and communities around the world come together to raise awareness of how we can create a world where fewer people die by suicide.

Lewes and Polegate MP Maria Caulfield said, “Every life lost to suicide is a tragic loss but also a tragedy that an individual got to the point where they considered it their only option.

“This World Suicide Prevention Day I want to let anyone struggling know that there are people out there who will listen and will help, whether that is friends and family, volunteer or professional services.

“Even during these difficult times where it has been harder to keep our connections with loved ones there are many ways that we can stay connected and get support.”

Each year has a different theme and focus, to bring to light a specific aspect of suicide prevention.

Every year Samaritans campaigns with more than 70 other suicide prevention and mental health groups under the National Suicide Prevention Alliance (NSPA).

This year, the theme is the same as two previous years, ‘Working Together to Prevent Suicide’ but given the current climate, members of the NSPA decided to focus on the theme ‘connection’.

Samaritans are available 24 hours a day 365 days a year on 116 123 or www.samaritans.org
