Bhaveshi Kumar, a specialist speech and language therapist at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, has published a book containing a 10 step intervention programme to help people working with students who are attending a mainstream school but need additional support with revision and exams.

‘Study skills for students with SLCN’ includes practical guidance and exercises to explore the skills that students need to effectively study and prepare for exams, encouraging them to reflect on how they learn and the study strategies that might be useful for them.

Divided into ten sessions, the book helps students to find fun and inspiring ways to revise, understand complex vocabulary and learn about time management skills for exams. They also create a study skills folder, that they can keep with them throughout their time at school.

Separate sections deal with health and wellbeing, with advice and strategies for combating stress, whilst understanding that every student is unique that there is no one size fits all approach.

Bhaveshi hopes that the book will empower students to get more out of their learning, and will support teachers, teaching assistants and other professionals working with young people with SLCN.

Bhaveshi said: “There are many children who find communication a challenge and this can have a detrimental impact on their education, their social interaction and their mental health.

“I’ve noticed that, while there are many guides available to support students with study and revision, very few of them cater to young people with speech, language and communication needs. Teachers and teaching assistants already have so much to manage in their classrooms, so I wanted to create something that was simple to follow but effective in helping educators to support SLCN students to achieve their potential. And while I’ve designed it to be used in schools, parents are also part of the process, with follow up activities designed for them to do at home, giving them a chance to support the different ways in which their child can learn and thrive at school.”

The book is suitable for a range of students from age 8-16 years old, including those with a diagnosis of autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and developmental language disorder. It could also be used with students who have social or emotional difficulties who struggle to engage, or who have English as a second language.

‘Study skills for students with SLCN’ costs £24.99 and is available now from a range of retailers including Waterstones, Routledge and Amazon, in both hard copy and eBook.
