New community garden will be a ‘safe and accessible space’ in Shoreham

A new community garden is set to open in Shoreham’s Buckingham Park in the Spring.

The project is the brainchild of Apron, a community initiative run by Lis Long, who approached Adur District Council with the idea.

She said she was inspired by the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership and the Moulsecoomb Forest Garden.

Lis said: “For some time Apron have been looking into the idea of a community garden and throughout lockdown this idea grew into a more definite aim.

“With so many of us using gardening as a means to get through what has been such a difficult time we wanted to create a safe and accessible space for the community to grow, share and learn together.

“We are thrilled to now be developing the idea and will be opening the garden in the spring.”

The aim is to create accessible volunteering and learning opportunities at the garden and to work with local organisations to address the growing issue of food poverty in the area.

Seasonal events and workshops will be held throughout the year, as well as educational sessions on sustainability, environment, and biodiversity and local heritage craft workshops.

Apron has pitched the project to West Sussex County Council for funding and a crowdfunding page has been set up so that local businesses and members of the community can support the project.
