The temporary cycle-way, which will link Spitalfield Lane to the railway station, has been set up with 'traffic wands' appearing to separate the road from the cycle path.

A West Sussex County Council spokesman said further cycling and pedestrian provisions were being considered as part of the Northern Gateway plans.

Sarah Sharp, district councillor for Chichester South and an advocate for improving cyclist provisions in the city, has hailed the progress 'an amazing step forward'.

She said: "I am over the moon to see the bold and exciting road space reallocation infrastructure which is hitting Chichester's streets. There is no doubt that this is an amazing step forward for Chichester.

"The inner ringroad has long dominated our city and is a barrier to walking and cycling - physically it is difficult for people to cross four lanes of traffic for example near the College and New Park on Oaklands Way.

"Allocating space to people on bikes sends a clear message that the councils acknowledge that we have to prioritise people on bikes and on foot over motorised traffic. Covid has made us re-think our priorities and healthy forms of exercise and ways to get around have risen on our collective agendas. We need more space for people who are making short journeys sustainably."

The Northgate gyratory was recently called a 'death trap' by another councillor, Clare Apel, who was knocked off her bike earlier this year.
