The final beams for the 130m-long bridge were over the railway line and Mill Creek were delivered and lifted into place last month.

Karl Taylor, East Sussex County Council assistant director of operations, said: “Contractors are now working on the next stage, which is constructing the reinforced concrete slabs that will form the deck of the new bridge.

“This part of the scheme is expected to take several months and in the meantime we’re also progressing the final earthworks to allow the eventual construction of the road itself.”

The Newhaven Port Access Road is expected to be completed by autumn this year, the county council said.

It will create direct access to the East Quay and allocated development land, open up 80,000 sq m of business space, allowing the creation of new jobs.

The scheme is being funded by a £10million grant from the Local Growth Fund money through the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership and £13.2million from the county council’s capital programme – which is money set aside for one-off projects.
