The building society said the Old London Road branch will close for the final time on May 6, 2021.

Nationwide said the decision was made because ‘there aren’t enough members coming in and it would cost too much to bring the branch up to the standards’ customers expect.

“This was something we were aware of before the current lockdown measures changed everything,” Nationwide wrote in a letter to customers who had used the branch within the last 12 months.

In the letter, which confirmed the Ore branch would be closing on May 6, Nationwide added: “We made a promise that we’d continue to invest in our branches and maintain at least one branch in every town and city where we currently are, until at least May 2021. We’ve now extended that commitment until January 2023. And whilst this closure may be disappointing for you, we’d love to see you in any of the nearby branches. We plan to invest in Hastings branch before your Ore branch closes.”

The Hastings branch, in Wellington Place, is currently closed while improvement works are carried out.

However, it is due to reopen before the Ore branch closes. The Hastings branch shut on January 21 and is expected to reopen on April 12.

People have been advised to avoid visiting bank branches unless absolutely necessary during the national lockdown.
