Paralympic Torch run ‘unforgettable’ for Rustington’s Carrie

“LIFE-CHANGING” – these were the words used by a caring Rustington woman as she described her run with the Paralympic Torch.

Carrie Reynolds was one of the privileged few to be running with the flame through London, just hours before the spectacular opening ceremony for the Paralympics kicked off last Wednesday (August 29).

Carrie, of Old Manor Road, was nominated for her tireless years of dedication, helping to inspire the area’s disabled youngsters to take part in sporting activities.

Speaking about her torch-run glory, the 32-year-old said: “I was in my own little bubble.

“There were hundreds of people lining the street, cheering us on and asking to have their photos taken with us.

“It was an incredible moment and it was a bit overwhelming. There was so much support for all of the torchbearers. It was life-changing.”

Carrie, who works as a community development manager with Inspire Leisure in Littlehampton, ran through Piccadilly Circus and took part in the torch “kiss” with Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson – who has, during her sporting career, won an impressive 11 Paralympic gold medals.

“That was quite a brilliant moment for me,” admitted Carrie. “Tanni is such a great advocate for disabled sports, it was a real honour to see her.”

Carrie first became involved in helping disabled youngsters, about six years ago, when she volunteered with the Wasps Multi-sports Club, which is based at The Angmering School.

She has since helped found the Southern Area Disability Sports Partnership, as well as becoming the chairman of the Sussex Disability Sports Forum and serving as the lead consultant for Sussex School Games for Disability Sport, which helps organise an annual Olympic-style event attended by some 1,600 children.
