The election is normally a lively event attended by many residents and hosted by one of the local pubs, but this year’s event was forced to become virtual because of the current Covid restrictions.

Three candidates were running this year, Iain Pringle representing the Sad Dads fitness group, Den Jordan representing the Singing Allsorts, and Creases - the White Harte Inn’s pub dog.

The election is based on how much money each candidate raises. Every penny that makes it to the ballot box on election night counts as a vote, and this year the candidates took it to record-breaking levels.

This was despite the difficulties caused by the lockdown which made it more difficult for the candidates to organise their planned fundraising event.

Iain Pringle’s bike ride from Cuckfield to the twin town of Aumale in France became a 70 mile loop around Sussex instead, and Den Jordan was forced to cancel events at the Queens Hall but, come election night, they both produced amazing totals.

In third place was Creases the pub dog with 20,000 votes.

In second place was Den Jordan with 852,500 votes - which could easily have been a winning total in another year.

Winning the election to become the new Mayor Cuckfield was Iain Pringle with a record breaking 1,500,000 votes.

Iain was presented with the keys to Cuckfield by the Sherriff of Cuckfield in a small ceremony after the election.

All the ‘votes’ add up to almost £24,000 raised for local charities and good causes which will be distributed in the coming weeks and months.

Normally, on the Saturday following the election, there would be a grand procession around Cuckfield with floats, marching bands, steam engines and of course the new Mayor, greeting the people of Cuckfield.

A spokesman said: “Sadly this event also had to be cancelled but Independent State of Cuckfield is planning to be back with a bang in 2021.”
