Peter has been a patron of the Sussex children’s hospice, near Arundel, and Together for Short Lives, the UK charity for seriously ill children and children’s hospices, since January last year.

He had been due to visit in person during Children’s Hospice Week, June 22 to 28, but with that ruled out due to coronavirus, he instead dropped in via video call on Wednesday to catch up with Karen, Izzy and Loui, who he has met on previous visits.

Peter said: “Children’s hospices are such special, vital places, but I think a lot of people don’t really understand what they are or the many different ways they support children and families.

“It was lovely to catch up with Izzy and Loui to see how they’re getting on, and hopefully I’ll be able to visit Chestnut Tree House again soon.”

Peter asked Karen for an update on what has been happening at Chestnut Tree House during the coronavirus pandemic.

She explained the hospice was still open to families in crisis needing extra support and staff were ‘thinking outside the box’ to find ways to help.

He asked Izzy’s mum, Natalie, and Loui’s parents how they had been coping, and chatted with the children about their toys and ice cream.

Natalie then asked Peter what he would do if he was not singing and he revealed his dad wanted him to be an architect.

Peter said: “I did not want to do it. He was like ‘well, when you finish school, that’s what you’re doing’, because my parents were very strict.

“I said ‘what if I get a recording deal before I finish school?’. And, of course, the chances of me getting a recording deal were so slim. He said ‘if you get a recording deal you don’t have to become an architect’, thinking I would never get a recording deal, and I got a recording deal.”

He said it was watching Michael Jackson doing the Moonwalk that made him want to perform and confirmed he will be doing Grease - The Musical next year.

Peter also recorded a separate message to all the children and families supported by hospices up and down the country, and thanked the care teams for the amazing work they do.

A spokesman for Chestnut Tree House said: “From the first time Peter Andre visited the hospice, he instantly understood what we’re all about. He shows genuine interest in the work we do and the families we care for, and always makes sure he spends time with everyone.

“We are incredibly grateful for Peter’s support as our patron, and hope that it helps more people to see what wonderful and vital places children’s hospices like Chestnut Tree House are.

“Peter is passionate about making a difference, and visits like this, even if it had to be virtual this time, help create special memories for our children and families, which is something you can’t put a price on.”
