Members met at the spotlessly clean Coultershaw Warehouse with everyone wearing masks and socially distancing where possible.

Tricia Stephens said: “It was amazing to see some of the items that had been made during lockdown and the business on the day. Makes ranged from family heirlooms – to be passed down the maker’s family – to delightful greetings cards for every occasion, plus children’s knitwear with lots of different things in between, much of it to sell for local charities at our next sale.”

The group’s next sale is likely to be at the Petworth Christmas event.

Last year, the PCCG raised over £2,5000 for The Sylvia Beaufoy Youth Club.

Group members use, where possible, unwanted, surplus or natural products to make a wide variety of gifts and decorations.

Current projects include shopping bags, cushions and greetings cards made out of donated designer fabric samples; pots, baskets and coasters made out of magazines and newspapers; knitted gifts using donated and scraps of wool; Christmas decorations using corks, fir cones curtain rings and much more.

Tricia said: “We are looking forward to being shown how to make corn dollies and adapting the technique to making Christmas tree decorations. For these, instead of using straw we are expecting to make our own by rolling newspaper or magazine pages into ‘straws’.

“New for next year will be a basket making workshop, again using magazines and newspaper to roll into ‘cane’. This had to be cancelled earlier this year due to the pandemic.

“We had already prepared our ‘cane’ at the last workshop before lockdown but a somewhat slow affair as we were distracted by recipes and articles on the pages!”

Members are welcome to bring their own project, make items to raise money or just come for coffee and a chat and see what others are doing. For further information email [email protected], visit petworthcommunity.org/petworth-community-craft-group or phone 01798 342016.
