The Good Morning Britain presenter sipped on the beer on Wednesday morning (July 1), in front of his teetotal co-host Susanna Reid and joked that he now found her ‘dull’ since she quit drinking almost two years ago.

The 55-year-old later shared pictures of himself with the tipple to his 7.6million followers on Twitter and said: “BOOM! First pint of Harvey’s in 4 months! Who cares, it’s only 6.42am... and I’ve got 2 more hours of live TV.”

He praised the local brewery live on TV, telling his viewers: “Look at that. I’ve got to say it’s a beautiful brewery. It’s a fantastic drop.”

Harvey’s Brewery said Piers, who lives in Newick, has always been a fan of the beer and the brewery has benefitted from his support on social media.

Hamish Elder, executive chairman, said: “Piers lives nearby and when we found out he hadn’t had a pint of Harvey’s for four months we arranged for a mini keg to be delivered to the studio.

“It was a light hearted opportunity for Piers to have a beer. And it was not just his own pint, but his own beer, with a ‘Piers Beer’ pump clip.

“We welcome his support. I have never met Piers, but I look forward to welcoming him at the brewery sometime in the future – when it is appropriate.”

Mr Elder said the coronavirus pandemic has been a challenging time for the brewery, but it was keen to start trading again.

“It has required a great deal of patience and it has been a worrying time through lockdown,” he commented.

“We couldn’t have done it without the government furlough scheme – we had to furlough all of our staff in pubs of course.”

He added: “It is going to be a difficult few weeks getting back to the new normal – whatever that is!”
