A police spokesman said: “Anyone who has any information which can help our investigation is asked to report online or ring 101 quoting serial 375 of 12/03.”

The arrest follows a pledge from Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne to crack down on dog thefts after a survey showed a shocking rise in incidents.

The survey revealed more than three-quarters of dog owners have become more wary of walking their dogs during the day for fear of theft.
