A public show of thanks to Horsham’s dustmen battling to do their vital work amid the coronavirus crisis has touched the hearts of the bin crews themselves.

The dustmen say they have been inundated with supportive messages, drawings and kind words.

One of the crewmen - Andy Kelly - spoke out on behalf of his colleagues. He said: “I just want to say thank you for all the kind and supportive messages from so many residents and all the kids.

“They all mean so much to me and my colleagues. Our messroom walls are covered with drawings, colourings and kind words from you all.”

He said they had also received chocolates and biscuits from grateful residents “but unfortunately they didn’t last long enough to be photographed.

“It’s so nice to have so many people waving and smiling all day. THANK YOU.”

A spokesman for Horsham District Council added: “Horsham District Council wishes to thank local residents and businesses for the ongoing kindness they have shown to our waste collection crews as they complete their waste, recycling and green waste rounds across the district.

“Crew members have received many posters, paintings, drawings, social media posts and cheery waves as they carry out their vital work and they really are very much appreciated.

“Throughout the coronavirus crisis, the council’s collections have continued without disruption to service levels.

Residents are reminded that they can book a skip or a Bulky Bag to remove any extra waste they may have.

“For those wanting to reduce waste, home compost bins are a great way to help reduce garden and food waste and also create great fertiliser for your garden.

“During this uncertain time, now is a good opportunity to get a home compost bin and make a start with grass cuttings, weeds and maybe the odd egg shell or two.”
