The council said the Red Lion, at the top of Brede Hill, was reported by Sussex Police for being open in early May, contrary to the coronavirus regulations that applied at the time.

As a result, the pub’s licence will be reviewed by the council’s licensing panel in August.

The panel could decide to revoke the licence, impose additional conditions or remove the designated premises supervisor, the council said.

Pending the outcome of the hearing, the Red Lion can continue to trade.

A Rother District Council spokesman said: “In early May, Sussex Police reported the Red Lion in Brede was open contrary to the Coronavirus Regulations that applied at the time. An application has been made to review the premises licence and a Licensing Panel will do so in August. The panel has the power to revoke the licence, impose additional conditions or remove the designated premises supervisor. The pub has not been closed and can continue to trade, pending the outcome of the hearing.”

Sussex Police said: “Sussex Police received a number of reports about people drinking outside the Red Lion public house in Brede on Friday, May 8. Officers attended, people were sent on their way and a licensing report was submitted to the council.”
