The problem came when staff from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks began repairs to a streetlight in St Martin's Street.

Rain forced the staff to end their work at the site for the day and they returned on Saturday (February 29) to find a pool of sewage had emerged from a hole in the ground where drainage works were being carried out.

Further rainfall today (Wednesday March 4) has not helped the situation as the hole begins to fill with water.

A spokesman for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks said: “Our teams began their repairs to the streetlighting column in St Martins Street on Friday afternoon; due to the torrential rainfall they were unable to complete the task that day and so left the site safe and secure and returned on Saturday with a view to finishing off the repairs.

"Returning on Saturday, SSEN engineers found raw sewage at the site, in addition to the rainfall. For everyone’s safety, we contacted Southern Water to alert them of the situation.”

Southern Water has been approached for comment.
