Stanley Northeast, 99, and his son Mike started a campaign to get the nation applauding at 7.45pm on Friday (May 8) with the Facebook page Clap 4 VE Day 75.

Mike said: “The page has been shared all over the country, especially Liverpool and London. We got a nice message of support from the Mayor of Glastonbury and even messages from New York, so hopefully it has reached far and wide and we can pay tribute to the heroes of 1945 by clapping at 7.45pm on Friday.”

He will also be judging a Normandy Veterans’ Association children’s poster competition and tomorrow (May 7), representatives of the RAF Benevolent Fund will be visiting his care home in Guildford Road, Rustington, to give him a goodie box.

Mike added: “He says he would swap all this to be able to meet up with other veterans and comrades.

“They know this would probably have been the last big opportunity for them all to get together.”
