Sharnfold Farm has put on a Christmas event, when many have been forced to cancel due to the pandemic, and it is everything you want for a magical and festive evening out with the family.

The Farmyard Cinema gives families the chance to watch a Christmas film on a big screen while enjoying a festive treat such as gingerbread, popcorn non-alcoholic mulled wine or a hot chocolate.

Our experience started at 4.30pm at the farm on Hailsham Road, near Stone Cross. You are immediately taken for a wander through the wintry wonderland surrounded by Christmas trees adorned with festive lights.

We then strolled through the mesmerising light tunnel which led us to a big but cosy barn. The barn is full of giant bean bags, separated to create socially-distanced family bubbles. Ivy and fairy lights cover the walls of the barn which is filled with Christmas decorations and includes a drink and snack bar.

Once you have made yourself comfy on one of the giant beanbags, a member of the Sharnfold team comes and takes your order and delivers your drinks and snack on a tray. This means families can stay within their bubbles and makes the event as Covid-safe as possible.

We watched Elf on the big screen while sipping on hot chocolate and the children then enjoyed an on-screen message from Father Christmas and one of his elves. The elf had the children dancing along to a Christmas song and then pretending to ring a magical bell. The bell sound means presents have been delivered to the barn and as we left the Farmyard Cinema, the children were given a present.

On the way out, there are more lights, decorations and festive photo opportunities to enjoy as you make your way back to the car park.

Not all films include the message from Father Christmas and a later screening of Love Actually or The Holiday would make a great choice for a couple’s date night.

Sharnfold Farm is a family business and popular among local families for its Hallowe’en event, but they have really delivered on their Christmas event too and with Covid restrictions putting a dampener on many festivities, this felt like even more of a treat – and a safe treat to boot. Social distancing was adhered to at all times and the rural, open location made it feel much safer than an indoor event. There are a range of films being shown this week and if you are looking for a festive experience before the big day this comes highly recommended.

The Farmyard Cinema runs until December 23 and includes Polar Express, Home Alone, Love Actually, The Grinch, Elf, Miracle on 34th Street and The Holiday.

Due to Covid, each film screening is limited to 30 people to comply with social distancing. Cost is £25 per ticket.
