Barby Keel started her animal sanctuary in 1971 to provide a home for animals initially in a caravan, with four acres of land which she purchased for a song. She is the driving force behind the centre still, and works tirelessly for her animals.

Mandi Rose, from the Sedlescombe Road store, said: “Sainsbury’s was one of the first Supermarkets to support the animal sanctuary.

Now the sanctuary is one of Sainsbury’s at Sedlescome Road’s Charity Partners and we support her work and champion her Centre.

“The Animal Food Bank at the front of the store has been faithfully filled week in and week out. When COVID-19 struck the nation, our wonderful customers still came through with donations and Barby has been amazed at the kindness and loyalty of our community.

“Sainsbury’s staff have been key workers throughout the pandemic and always pleased to see how many items are donated at front of store for Barby and her centre.

“Even in these trying and quite scary times, Barby and her volunteers were also key workers, continuing to provide shelter, love and food for their strays and our great community still show endless support.

“We at Sainsbury’s, Sedlescome Road, would like to say a huge thank you to the kind customers who support our Charity Partners.

“You are making a big difference to the lives of the animals in their care and you show how the community pulls together in times of need.”

Barby Keel was hit hard by the lockdown, having to close her Bexhill charity shop and cancel other fund raisers.

But she says local people still came to support, by delivering donations of food for the animals.

Volunteers continued to help out at the Freezeland Lane sanctuary working in a socially distanced way.

The charity rehomes or provides permanent refuge for abused, abandoned and unwanted animals. They operate a no destruction policy. For more visit www.barbykeel.btck.co.uk.
