The New York Film Academy visited Sussex Downs College in Lewes on Wednesday to search for the stars of tomorrow to join its hallowed ranks.
The internationally-renowned institution – which boasts half of Hollywood as alumni – sent its Associate Director of Acting and Musical Theatre Admissions Jonathan Juarbe to the college in search of new talent.
During his visit, Mr Juarbe auditioned performing arts students to see whether they could cut the mustard as apprentices at the New York Film Academy. Successful students will be notified in due course.
The exciting opportunity formed part of the college’s Performing Arts and Entertainment Industries Careers Day on Wednesday. Around 250 people attended, including current and former Sussex Downs College students and local pupils studying performing arts at school.
The day featured representatives from esteemed performing arts centres such as Rose Bruford College, the Central School for Speech and Drama and the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts – just some of the places Sussex Downs students graduate to. Students also had the chance to attend singing, acting and production workshops and talks on the principles of costume and set design.
Sussex Downs College has forged strong links with the New York Film Academy in recent months. In April, students were treated to a visit from the Academy where they took part in workshops to help further hone their skills. This led to some students enrolling in the Academy’s summer schools held at its New York and LA bases.
The college is one of only 15 colleges in the UK to hold Artsmark Gold status, which was awarded by Arts Council England for the quality of the college’s performing arts and media courses.
Elsewhere, employees from The National Fostering Agency Group have boosted their CVs with Sussex Downs College, signalling a promising start to the partnership between the two organisations.
The staff, who have spent the past year studying alongside their full-time jobs, were awarded their new qualifications at the National Fostering Agency Group’s yearly conference in Coventry.
