The Selsey Coastguard crew, as well as the Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team and Hayling Island Coastguard Rescue Team, were called to the scene at 3.18pm on Saturday.

A mud technician was deployed to rescue the person, who was safely extracted from the mud and transferred onto a stretcher, before being winched back to safe ground, a spokesman said.

Thankfully the casualty needed no medical assistance, and was just cold, so blankets were issued, the spokesman confirmed.

Safety advice was also given.

The Selsey Coastguard spokesman said: “If you become stuck in mud try to stay calm and spread your weight as much as possible, avoid moving and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

“If you see someone who has become stuck, don’t try to rescue them yourself, without specialist equipment you can easily become stuck too.

“The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you’re local or not.

“Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you’re in trouble.

“Please help us and our families stay safe.

“Be aware of the risks, keep your distance.”
