Sewer pipe work set to continue in Chichester

‘Scores of people’ interested in the £22.1 million scheme went to a public drop-in session at Chichester Baptist Church in February. Another session had been planned for Graylingwell this month but has had to be cancelled because of the Covid-19 lockdown. 

The next stage of Southern Water’s construction work will start from April 20.

A spokesman said: “A site team will be working at the junction with St Paul’s Road and Norwich Road, for approximately 100 meters towards Worcester Road, and other works starting from this week will take place at Kingsmead Avenue.

“Letters have recently been sent to local residents to confirm details of this work, and to kindly request that this area is kept clear of parked vehicles from April 20.”

Plans for the pipeline and pumping stations were given planning permission by West Sussex County Council in September 2018.

David Winterburn, senior project manager, said: “First of all, thank you to everyone who attended our public event at Chichester Baptist Church last month, feedback on our plans is essential.

“We are now in an extraordinary time and as key workers, we continue our planned essential works for this pipeline, but of course adhering to very strict rules – we ask people to be mindful of this.

“The new pipeline and pumping stations will provide essential wastewater services to the wider community.”

Works to set up a site compound in St Paul’s Road, which began in early March, are expected to be completed ‘over the next four weeks’.

The spokesman added: “The pipeline and pumping stations run from the west of Chichester to Tangmere wastewater treatment works, in an arc to the north of the town.

“This will serve around 4,000 homes in key development areas around Chichester.

“The scheme started in June 2019 and construction of the new pipeline is planned to be complete in August 2021, with the whole project concluding in 2021.”

To date, around 6km of pipeline has been installed between Tangmere Wastewater Treatment Works and Westhampnett Wastewater Pumping Station.

Work to build the pumping station at Westhampnett and Tangmere are also said to be ‘progressing well’.
