Shock over free school meals given to children in Eastbourne

The father, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was shocked by a photograph of one child’s lunch – consisting of a cheese roll, orange, and biscuit.

He said, “I don’t understand how that’s nutritious in any way.

“With the Covid situation, children need food high in nutrition and vitamins to keep their immune systems in top shape.

“Not a burger roll with cheese, a biscuit and an orange.”

The photo was taken before the half-term break, and is said to have been provided to a pupil by a school in Eastbourne, which has been approached for comment.

It comes after the campaign by football player Marcus Rashford calling on the government to provide free school meals during the holidays has brought the subject to the forefront.

The parent said, “There’s so much publicity at the moment about free school meals, but people don’t realise what their kids are eating while they’re at school.

“It’s quite a poor area. For some of the kids unfortunately it might be the only meal they get that day.”

The parent said he was surprised this is what £2.30 a meal – funded by the taxpayer – is paying for.

He has complained to both the school and the catering company which makes the meals, Pabulum Catering.

A spokesperson for Pabulum Catering said, “[This individual] has made a complaint to Pabulum regarding the provision of a packed lunch.

“We have not yet completed the investigation to report back to him and we will contact them very soon.

“Since the start of the new academic term in September, we have worked within the Covid safe procedures that are in place at the school.

“These procedures will change and we will return to a hot meal provision from November 16, 2020.”
