SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD: The Apludram Centre is nominated

Set up by a group of parents more than 20 years ago, everyone at the Apuldram Centre is committed to ensuring adults with learning disabilities have access to a wide range of opportunities in which they can help meet their potential.

Readers now want the centre’s work to be recognised with a nomination in the Special Recognition Award of the Observer Community Awards.

With many loyal supporters including volunteers, family members and members of the wider community, the centre’s aim is provide clients with meaningful work opportunities, which include horticulture, woodwork and cookery, with many of the goods made sold in its shop.

A real family atmosphere thrives throughout the centre and it is also a very relaxed and happy place to be, with clients able to help grow fruit and vegetables as well as look after the chickens and other animals which live in the grounds.

Clients can choose which areas of work they want to get involved in, overseen by dedicated and skilled experts in their field, and whatever they spend the day doing, clients receive much encouragement.

The support offered is outstanding and clients are able to lead a degree of independence while also feeling well-cared for, with plenty of help on offer from the centre.

Clients also get to learn life skills such as making snacks and hot drinks, healthy eating, shopping, road safety and using money.

Last year, it officially opened a five-bedroom house on site to provide 24-hour supported living which has been a great success and the clients enjoy a busy social life with the calendar packed full of outings,

This year the centre also held its own summer festival, called Apulstock, while a dedicated band of volunteers help throughout the week.
