Sprinkler system saves Hastings business from serious fire damage

A sprinkler system at a Hastings business helped prevent serious damage when a fire broke out earlier this week, according to East Sussex Fire.

Crews were called to AF Blakemore and Son, in Ivy House Lane, Hastings, at 6am on Sunday (October 4).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service praised the business for installing the sprinklers system, which stopped a small fire quickly spreading throughout the building.

Upon arrival, crews found a small fire located in the fan unit, which had been quickly extinguished by the sprinkler system, the fire service said.

Andrew Gausden, business safety manager said: “This is a timely reminder to other companies to invest in a sprinkler system which could protect your business from severe fire damage.

“A sprinkler system really can make a difference. In 2019 we attended a similar fire locally which resulted in the total loss of a business - sprinklers would have made the difference.

“Sprinkler systems are designed to contain a fire ensuring businesses are often up and running within a short period of time due to limited damage.”

A fire service spokesman added: "East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service would like to highlight the importance of such fire safety measures, as they deliver benefits that far exceed the cost of installation and maintenance."
