St Leonards plumber died due to asbestos exposure, inquest told

A retired plumber died after being exposed to asbestos throughout his working life, an inquest heard.

Alan Graham, 75, of Royal Terrace, Terrace Road, St Leonards, passed away at St Michael’s Hospice on September 10 this year.

An inquest into his death was held on Tuesday (November 3).

In a statement read out at the hearing, Dr Francesca Stoneley, speciality doctor at St Michael’s Hospice, said Mr Graham was admitted to hospital in February last year with shortness of breath, a cough and fever.

Various hospital tests revealed that Mr Graham was suffering from mesothelioma, a tumour caused by inhaling asbestos fibres.

The inquest heard Mr Graham worked as a heating engineer over many years. He was admitted to the hospice in St Leonards in August last year.

Coroner Alan Craze concluded Mr Graham’s death was caused by industrial disease.
