Sussex Police have responded to reports today (Sunday) from concerned members of the public surrounding a spinning crane in Worthing caused by Storm Ciara.

The crane is situated in Brighton Road and police said the structure’s developers explained it is designed so that its brakes are off which allows it to move in the wind, preventing it from blowing over.

Sussex Police said on Twitter, “We have had a number of reports about the crane in Brighton Road turning in the high winds. Sussex Police have been in contact with the developers and the cranes safety mechanism is designed to let it move in the wind.”

Pete Jennings of Sussex Police said on Twitter, “We are getting lots of calls about a crane swinging round in the wind in Worthing. This is normal and the swing brake is released to prevent the crane from blowing over. This is called ‘weathervaning’.”
