Malcolm Robinson, who founded Strange Phenomena Investigations in 1979, said the unidentified flying objects witnessed in Billingshurst, Barns Green, Warnham and Rudgwick were similar to other sightings in the county.

He said the lights could not be definitively identified without further information but that just one per cent of sightings are likely to be ‘aerial objects that defy explanation’.

Malcolm added: “Ninety-five per cent of all UFO reports have natural explanations.

“It’s only a small five per cent we just don’t currently understand.”

In that five per cent, three per cent could be secret government technology, according to Malcolm.

Recently air cadet Alex Bridle reported seeing ‘a bright orange light’ over Billingshurst moving high and flashing before speeding up and disappearing.

People in Barns Green and Warnham also reported seeing strange lights. Diane Stirling saw them at her home in Warnham at about the same time as Alex witnessed them. “I first saw a flash, almost like a plane’s light flashing, but just one, then a trail and it literally disappeared,” she said.

Building contractor Kevin Leader spotted a strange object in the night sky while taking a photo of a plane near his home in Rudgwick.

“I saw an object at the front of the plane which then went to the back and then went vertically at speed.”

When he later studied his photo he saw a bright round-shaped object in the trail of the aircraft. “It’s clear to me it wasn’t a weather balloon, satellite or Chinese lantern - it was shaped like what people call a UFO or space craft.”

Malcolm said he works at the ‘sharp end of ufology’ – the study of UFOs – and has heard ‘crazy stories’ in his four decades of investigations.

The investigator has written several books on paranormal activity and once joined a submarine trip in Loch Ness in a bid to locate the Loch Ness monster.

He said Steven Spielberg wanted to help him catch Nessie and that he was once slapped in the face by a ghost.

Malcolm said there are a lot of ‘armchair sceptics’ and that his work also includes uncovering fraudsters.
